30 226 panneaux solaires viennent d’être installés par le constructeur automobile Ford dans son carport de l’usine de montage de Silverton. Désormais, l’usine d’assemblage produit 35 % de son électricité à partir d’énergies renouvelables, l’installation de carport solaire générant 13,5 MW d’énergie propre.
Ford mise beaucoup sur l’initiative solaire qui fait partie de sa stratégie globale. L’objectif étant de procéder au retrait de son usine Silverton du réseau, Ford Afrique du Sud paraphant un accord d’achat d’électricité avec la société sud-africaine de financement solaire, SolarAfrica, pour l’installation.
Ockert Baie, vice-président des opérations de Ford Afrique du Sud déclare que « ce projet place fièrement l’usine d’assemblage de Silverton sur la carte dans le cadre de l’engagement de Ford en faveur de la durabilité alors que nous migrons notre approvisionnement énergétique des combustibles fossiles vers des ressources renouvelables respectueuses de l’environnement ».
Par ailleurs, le constructeur automobile a indiqué que l’installation solaire photovoltaïque va contribuer à diminuer environ 20 072 tonnes d’émissions de carbone par an, plaçant l’entreprise fermement sur la bonne voie vers son objectif d’émissions sans carbone de 2035.
