L’armateur marseillais CMA-CGM a dévoilé sa participation au capital de l’exploitant français OneWeb (ex WorldVu) et ses 650 satellites de télécommunications, rapporte le journal économique Les Echos.
OneWeb, société britannique aujourd’hui valorisée à 3,4 milliards de dollars, vient justement de voir 24% de ses parts rachetées par Eutelsat, opérateur français de satellites créé en 1977. Rodolphe Saadé, à la tête de CMA-CGM, était entré dans le capital de OneWeb à l’automne dernier, quand Patrick Drahi, la magna des télécoms, avait justement tenté de racheter Eutelsat.
L’opération révèle en tout cas des ambitions de l’armateur dans la logistique de l’espace : « CMA CGM s’intéresse à l’idée d’appuyer la création d’un groupe au rayonnement international face à Starlink (NDLR : groupe spécialisé dans l’internet haut débit à faible latence pour les zones mal desservies) », déclare un proche de l’opération, dans Les Echos. « Rodolphe Saadé est convaincu que l’espace est la frontière ultime de la logistique ».
De la logistique orbitale ?
En juin 2021, le dirigeant a en effet rapproché ses équipes de recherche de celles du CNES (Centre national d’études spatiales). Un partenariat pour cinq ans a été conclu pour « identifier, concevoir et développer en commun des solutions innovantes au service de la logistique et de l’activité spatiale ».
L’ambition est de mettre au point des solutions dans le routage maritime intelligent pour renforcer la sécurité de la navigation, la transition énergétique du transport maritime et le suivi des activités logistiques.
En novembre, CMA CGM avait noué en toute discrétion un autre partenariat avec Thales (groupe d’électronique français spécialisé dans l’aérospatiale), vise à développer un véhicule logistique orbital, lit-on dans Les Echos. L’avenir du transport sur terre se joue-t-elle aujourd’hui dans l’espace ?
