In southern Nigeria, an explosion occurred on an oil pipeline operated by Italian oil giant ENI, causing a drop in exports and a spill of oil.
ENI-led Naoc Joint Venture said an explosion occurred at its facility in Nembe, Bayelsa State, reducing exports from the Brass terminal by 25 barrels per day (bpd). The company said the “incident occurred on the 000 Ogoda/Brass oil line at Okparatubo in Nembe Local Government Area. The event was caused by an explosion, which led to a spill.”
The company said wells connected to the pipeline have been shut down as containment booms and barges have been deployed to reduce the impact of the oil leak.
ENI did not provide further details on the cause of the explosion. It should be noted that in Nigeria, Africa's largest oil producer, oil companies are regularly blamed for environmental disasters, as are criminal groups that drill pipelines to plunder crude.
"This is the second explosion in a matter of days, following a previous incident on February 28 at its Obama Flow Station, which resulted in a 5 b/d drop in production," the company said. "Both explosions were caused by vandalism. It said 000 barrels leaked in the first incident and 20 barrels were spilled in the second.
"Residents of fishing villages operating in the creeks and near the Atlantic coast in Nembe and Brass have complained of the negative consequences of frequent spills in the area," said Idris Musa, director of the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (Nosdra).
Noel Ikonikumo, chairman of a local fishermen's union, laments that "every time there is a spill, their nets and other fishing gears are soaked with crude oil, they are condemned and they can no longer use them because the smell of crude oil scares away the fish." "We have written to the companies concerned to hear us and help us, but we have not received any response," he said.
