Much more than just a port, the Tanger Med complex is positioned as a leading integrated logistics platform, connected to a multimodal transport network that serves all regions of Morocco, and to the largest ports on five continents.

The Tanger Med Group operates and develops port, logistics and industrial platforms. It manages the Tanger Med port complex, the 1st largest port in the Mediterranean and Africa. Through Marsa Maroc, it also manages 24 container and bulk terminals in 10 Moroccan ports. The total volume handled by the group is 146 million tonnes of goods and 8.5 million TEU containers.

The group is also developing industrial and logistics zones, which are home to 1,200 companies and employ 100,000 people.

The port complex, a global giant

Perfectly situated on the Strait of Gibraltar, thanks to the royal vision that opted for this strategic location, the port complex offers handling capacity for 9 million containers, 7 million passengers, 700,000 TIR trucks and 1 million vehicles. With over 7.56 million TEU containers handled in 2022, up 6% on 2021, the port complex has become a must for the world's largest container ships. On a global scale, the port is on its way to becoming one of the world's top 20 hubs.

Tonnage will reach 108 million tonnes in 2022, after 100 MT in 2021. This represents almost 55% of the national tonnage of over 200 MT. The Tanger Med port complex covers an area of 1,000 ha and comprises the Tanger Med 1 port, with two container terminals, a rail terminal, a hydrocarbon terminal, a general cargo terminal and a vehicle terminal; and the Tanger Med 2 port, with two container terminals.

The port complex also includes the passenger and ro-ro port, with access and border inspection areas, passenger and TIR embarkation quays, regulatory areas and the terminal. The port complex also includes the Tanger Med Port Center, the 29,000 m² covered Tanger Med business center, which is the main hub for the maritime and port community.

Connecting the world to Made In Morocco

Much more than a port, the Tanger Med complex is positioned as a leading integrated logistics platform, connected to a multimodal transport network (rail links, freeways and expressways) for the transport of goods and people. Its international connectivity is one of its key strengths. Through several of the world's leading shipping lines, the port provides regular services to over 180 ports and 70 countries on all 5 continents.

As such, it is a veritable maritime bridge linking Europe to Africa, and a decisive vector in the dynamics of trade with Europe. Ro-Ro activity in particular links Tangier Med to Spain (Algeciras, Barcelona, Motril and Malaga), France (Sète, Marseille) and Italy (Genoa).

In this respect, the Tanger Med port complex is Morocco's leading platform for import/export flows. A true barometer of the national economy, TIR truck traffic has reached record levels in 2022, with over 459,000 TIR trucks handled, up 13% on 2021. This traffic is mainly driven by the upturn in industrial exports, as well as by the good performance of the agricultural campaign and agro-industrial exports.

The same applies to exports of cars produced in Morocco: 478,589 new vehicles were handled in 2022, up 11% on 2021. These cars are brought to the terminal via five daily trains from Renault and two from Peugeot.

A world-class logistics hub

The transport and logistics sector represents a major challenge. As it grows and positions itself on the world's trade flows, Tanger Med is positioning itself as a logistics hub at the heart of global supply chains. Tanger Med's logistics offering offers major advantages.

In addition to our extensive global connectivity, we offer a comprehensive real-estate offering, including ready-to-use warehouses, multi-modal facilities for the conversion and multiplexing of containerized and Ro-Ro flows, and land and sea consolidation services to Europe, China and the United States.

Renowned logistics operators and distributors such as DHL, Décathlon, Ceva Logistics and Nippon Express have also set up at Medhub, the Tanger Med logistics zone. They offer comprehensive services such as value-added logistics for groupage, distribution and procurement, order preparation, warehousing, packaging, labeling and quality control.

The automotive industry in particular, the Kingdom's main export sector, benefits greatly from this logistics offering. The various sectors (wiring, metal stamping, vehicle interiors and seats, and plastic injection) rely on the "advanced supplier warehouses" that have sprung up in the Tanger Med business parks.

These warehouses are operated by world-renowned logisticians, who provide value-added logistics and redistribute to Africa, Europe and America. To date, Tanger Med has developed almost 200,000 m² of logistics space dedicated to automotive parts logistics.

These warehousing areas serve automotive suppliers based in Morocco and Europe, notably Renault and PSA-Stellantis. In addition, some 30 automotive suppliers based in Tangier Med, such as Valéo, Yazaki, Sumitomo, GMD and many others, use these "Advanced Supplier Warehouses" to optimize their logistics operations for the automotive industry.

The logistics infrastructure offered by Tanger Med and its proximity to target markets are a competitive lever for investors, and an opportunity for Morocco to integrate global logistics corridors.

Operator and developer of industrial platforms

The Tanger Med Group's impact on the Moroccan economy is also reflected in the dynamism of its inland industrial zones (Renault Tanger Med, Tanger Automotive City, Tanger Free Zone, etc.). The Group plans and develops over 2,500 ha of business parks, which are home to more than 1,200 companies.

They generate a business volume of 133 billion dirhams in high value-added sectors such as the automotive, aeronautics, textile, agri-food and logistics industries. The economic and social impact of these industrial hubs is considerable, employing tens of thousands of people.
