A resident of the Gaston Berger University of Saint Louis in Senegal, Appolinaire Agossou had the privilege of being selected among the winners of the MISE (Maersk International Shipping Education) competition initiated by the shipping company Maersk Line. An opportunity that will allow him to take his first steps in the world of maritime and Supply Chain with two years of experience. Subsequently, he joined the agri-food company PATISEN, as a transit assistant, introducing him at the same time to the world of transit. With around fifteen years of experience, this logistics and Supply Chain enthusiast decided to chart his own course by launching ITB Senegal SA in 2020 with investor partners, an ambitious company providing services in transit, transport and consulting that sets no limits in a constantly changing sector.
- You have been the General Manager of ITB Senegal since January 2020. Can you tell us about ITB, its activities and services?
ITB Senegal is a sister company of ITB Limited Guinea and we are really strong in everything that is transit and transport. We also develop consulting and warehousing activities and we strive in the best possible way to support our clients to be able to import and export their goods.
We help them to make the right Supply Chain, we try to have the best resources to support them in this, whether in terms of human, financial and technical resources. We pay particular attention to their requests.
- After two years of existence in the market, where do you place ITB in the concert of logistics companies in Senegal?
ITB is a very young Senegalese company with just two years of existence. So, we are a startup that is growing, but we still want to differentiate ourselves in the way we do things. We tell ourselves that what multinationals do, there is no reason why we, Africans, are not capable of doing it. We try to attract the best human resources, we provide them with the best technical orientations, logistical and financial means in order to put ourselves at the level of these multinationals.
There is no reason why some of our compatriots should agree to do Supply Chain and transit in an informal, archaic way like our grandparents did. We really avoid falling into this trap. We absolutely want to offer the best possible services.
- Transit is a very important sensitive sector in a country's economy. In your opinion, what are the challenges and prospects for Senegal?
The challenges are above all to be able to support the development of the exploitation of new natural resources that are projected for 2023 and that is already tomorrow. We should not leave the place empty to competing multinationals, we must be ready. I invite Senegalese actors who can to enter this niche.
Next year, all those who are not ready will be "out of the market". So, it really takes rigor, seriousness, a lot of willpower and above all, hard work to maintain a performance dynamic.
- You have a rich professional background which has led you to work in several companies, what analysis do you make of the logistics sector in Senegal in terms of training and standard practices?
In Senegal, we are lucky to have very good institutes, personally I think that our young people are well trained but we also need a lot of rigor in the work. Even if you are well trained and day to day you do not work with the spirit of wanting to deliver the best possible service, it will not work.
You have to get in tune and be the best in your activity to be able to last. I really invite the actors to do it with all the passion and not to accept compromises. You really have to love what you do. If you work seriously, there are attitudes and approaches that should not be adopted. Unfortunately, there are certain practices that are plaguing our sector of activity and these are deplorable and should be banned.
- What is your assessment of Africa Supply Chain magazine?
This is a very interesting magazine that allows us to be up to date with our sector of activity. Africa Supply Chain provides a lot of information related to the logistics sector in Senegal, in the sub-region in Africa and all over the world. It is really a very rich, innovative magazine, carried by valuable people who believe a lot in the Supply Chain.
