ANGELA HARTNETT’S BEEF & VEAL MEATBALLS
Meatballs are super-quick to make for a weeknight supper and there are many ways to serve them (see tip).
The veal in these gives a lightness to the result, but you can swap it out for all beef, or flavourful pork mince.
This is a good way to use up any day-old bread hanging
around. The recipe is easy to double up on and freeze so
you have a meal for an emergency.
SERVES 4
4 tbsp olive oil, plus extra for the onion
1 onion, finely chopped
2 garlic cloves, chopped
400g tin chopped tomatoes
200g white bread (day old, if possible)
whole milk (enough to soak the bread)
500g beef mince
250g English veal mince
2 tbsp finely grated parmesan, plus extra to serve
4 anchovies, finely chopped
2 tbsp chopped flat-leaf parsley
salt and freshly ground black pepper
350g dried spaghetti, to serve (optional; see tip)
1 First make a tomato sauce. In a saucepan, heat a dash
of olive oil over a medium heat, then add half the chopped onion and half the garlic,
then sauté for 10 minutes to soften. Add the tomatoes and
when the liquid starts to bubble, reduce to a simmer and leave
to cook, stirring occasionally (about 20 minutes, to create
a thick sauce), while you make the meatballs.
2 In a bowl, soak the bread in the milk until soft.
In another bowl, mix the beef, veal, parmesan, anchovies, half the parsley and the rest of the onions and garlic.
Then add the soaked bread, lightly squeezing any excess milk from it first.
Mix well and season with salt and pepper. Mould the mixture into 12-14
meatballs.
3 Put the 4 tablespoons of olive oil in a large frying pan over a
medium heat. When hot, add the meatballs, turning (for
about 5 minutes) to ensure they colour all over. If necessary, cook in batches
so they are not all squashed together, setting each batch aside on a plate while you cook the remainder.
4 To finish, remove the meatballs from the pan and set aside.
Pour the tomato sauce into the frying pan over a medium heat.
Put the meatballs back into the pan for a further 4-5 minutes to cook through.
Sprinkle with the remaining parsley before serving.
TIP You can serve the meatballs as they come, or on top of spaghetti.
If you would prefer the latter, cook the pasta according to the packet instructions until
al dente. Drain it in a colander, reserving a cupful of the cooking water
to loosen the meatball sauce if necessary, and then transfer
it back to the pan and toss it with a little olive oil and butter.
Put the spaghetti on a serving plate and top
with the meatballs and sauce. Finish with a drizzle of olive oil and a sprinkle of parmesan.

by viewers and critics
For a few seconds, the two stars sat in silence as
they both waited for the other to answer the question.
‘Tell them how you feel, Joaquin,’ Lady Gaga, 38, said to her costar as she
held out a fake microphone in front of him.
‘It’s so hard to talk about but I think we feel like we achieved what we set
out to do,’ Joaquin, 49, simply stated.
Someone on X, formerly Twitter, posted the moment online last week and
it went viral, gaining more then 437,000 views in a matter of days – and many
users took their initial silence as proof that
they ‘didn’t like’ the film.
The internet has been flooded with negative posts about the flick ever since it
premiered, with one user branding it as a ‘bore’ and another claiming it
had ‘no plot.’
Many social media users have also slammed the
movie’s final scene, which saw main character Arthur Fleck (portrayed by Joaquin) brutally stabbed to death by a fellow inmate.
This meant that the man that audiences had been watching over the course of the two movies was never the
Joker at all, but in fact, the infamous villain from the Batman series was really just the random inmate
who killed Arthur in the last moments of the film.
The shocking twist left numerous viewers unsatisfied,
and they took to social media to share their frustration.

‘That ending? It’s so bad that not only it ruins Joker 2 but also the first Joker for the audience,’ read a fourth tweet.
‘The Joker had so much potential but that f**king ending
ruined everything,’ a fifth said.
The Todd Phillips-directed musical serves as a follow-up to the 2019 box
office hit, which was simply titled Joker.
The first film grossed over $1 billion and at the time was the highest-grossing
R-rated film of all time. It received 11 Oscar nominations –
two of which it won.
The sequel, however, has already been much less successful.
It had a lackluster $40 million debut at the box office in its first weekend,
and has a low rating of 33 percent and 31 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
‘Undoing much of the goodwill from its predecessor, the sequel
convolutes what could have been a unique character study into a bloated encore that goes out with a whimper,’ reads one review.
Another critic wrote, ‘This movie is a disjointed mess and a waste of time.

SHANGHAI, Dec 6 (Reuters) – The yuan was little changed on Friday against the dollar, but is headed for
its tenth straight weekly loss amid concerns that new tariff threatened
by President-elect Donald Trump will heighten strains on the struggling Chinese economy.
Analysts expect the dollar to remain firm as Trump’s policies are expected to drive up
U.S. inflation, but they believe Beijing will
prevent the yuan from falling too much. “We anticipate some depreciation pressure in an expected strong dollar environment,” Lynn
Song, Greater China chief economist at ING, said in a note.
However, “we don’t expect an intentional large-scale depreciation and think the yuan will remain a low-volatility currency vis-à-vis most other Asian currencies.” The yuan was changing hands at
7.2549 per dollar around midday, little moved from the previous close.
Although the currency has rebounded from a one-year low of
7.2996 hit on Tuesday, it is poised to register its longest weekly losing streak since 2018.
The dollar index fell to one-week low overnight and “the USD’s consolidation should unwind the upside pressure building” in the yuan, aided
by ongoing attempts by China’s central bank to restrain its decline, said Alvin Tan,
strategist at RBC Capital Markets.
Recent data has painted a mixed picture of China’s economic recovery, with manufacturing activities improving, but property sales in many Chinese cities remaining weak.
China’s “economic landscape is unarguably dull, and the absence of excitement is perhaps the most salient feature,” said John Browning, managing director of BANDS Financial.
He doesn’t expect huge stimulus to be announced during next week’s Central Economic Work Conference, as “Beijing’s largesse will be reserved until after Trump is restored to the White House and the trade war formally begins.” Top policymakers will gather at the conference to agree on major economic goals for next year.
But the target for 2025 growth, one of the most closely-watched indicators globally for clues of Beijing’s near-term policy
intentions, likely will not be officially announced until an annual parliament meeting in March.
During Trump’s first term as president, the yuan weakened about 5% against the
dollar after the initial round of U.S.
tariffs on Chinese goods in 2018, and fell another 1.5%
a year later when trade tensions escalated.
Growth worries and expectations of further monetary easing by Beijing pushed China’s 10-year treasury yields below
2% to record lows this week, worsening the yield disadvantage
against the U.S., and exerting downward pressure on the yuan. ING’s Song expects the onshore yuan to
move within a band between 7.00-7.40 per dollar, but could fall further to 7.50 “if tariffs come in earlier or more aggressive than our forecasts.” LEVELS AT 03:

LONDON, Sept 28 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International (PMI) on Thursday signalled a slower than anticipated U.S.
roll out of its IQOS heated tobacco device, a choice analysts
said was positive for its competitors in the short term.
The New York-listed Marlboro maker also said it aims for more than two thirds of its net revenues
to come from “smoke-free” products by 2030, up from 50% in 2025, as
it tries to transform its image from a cigarette purveyor to a driver of the shift to healthier alternatives.
Investors have been closely watching IQOS’ entry into the U.S., the world’s
largest market for nicotine products, and had been expecting it from May 2024 next
year. Reuters reported on Wednesday that PMI is hiring lobbyists across a host of
key U.S. states ahead of the launch.
Chief Executive Jacek Olczak said IQOS would launch in four cities in two unnamed U.S.
states from 2024, but a national launch would only come
after PMI receives approval to sell the latest version, known as IQOS ILUMA.
The company was planning to apply for approval in October and expected it from 2025, he continued.
“We need to warm up the tyres,” he said of the initial
launch, which would help PMI fine tune its approach.
A national roll-out of ILUMA would follow but
in phases, he continued, adding launching in 10 states in the first year would make sense.
Meaningful traction for PMI’s heated tobacco products in the U.S.
“now looks delayed until ILUMA,” Owen Bennett, equity analyst at
Jefferies, said in a note, adding this was a positive for PMI’s rivals.
Olczak also signalled that PMI’s push into non-nicotine products was no longer a priority.
It recently scrapped an ambition for $1 billion in net revenues to come from sales of such
products by 2025.
Instead, PMI will focus its resources on IQOS and nicotine pouch brand ZYN, Olczak said, adding it had been too optimistic around acceptance
of big tobacco companies operating outside of nicotine.
PMI also announced updated medium-term targets including for
revenue and earnings per share, and ambitious volume targets for
IQOS and ZYN.
ZYN and other oral nicotine products in the U.S. would help drive an expected
$2 billion in revenues there in 2024, even before IQOS
ILUMA, executives said.

Speaking to Variety on Sunday, she voiced her excitement to
return to the city, as she gushed about how much she loved India.
She said: I always leave my trips feeling so rejuvenated and full of
inspiration. One of the best parts about touring the world is getting to be a tourist in so many new places,
and I always find the best things to do when I’m in Asia and definitely in India.
Last time I visited, I met so many warm and kind people.
The chart-topper hasn’t performed in Mumbai for five years,
with her last show being at the OnePlus Music Festival in 2019.
She admitted: ‘It’s been so long since my last performance in Mumbai.
I’m trying not to set too many expectations going
in, but I think I’m most looking forward to just being on stage and
reconnecting with my fans that I haven’t seen in so long.’
Following Saturday’s show, Dua will jet straight over to South Korea for two
shows on Wednesday and Thursday in Seoul, closing out
the first leg of the tour.

Dua has been accompanied for much of her tour by her boyfriend Callum, sharing loved-up glimpses at their romance throughout her travels.

Oct 27 (Reuters) – Marlboro maker Altria Group Inc on Thursday announced a strategic partnership
with Japan Tobacco in an attempt to boost its smoke-free category.
Altria and JT will jointly establish Horizon Innovations LLC, which would be
responsible for U.S. marketing and commercialization of heated tobacco stick (HTS) products owned and developed by either company.
Altria said the joint venture would be through its
subsidiary Philip Morris USA that will hold a 75%
economic interest in Horizon and Japan Tobacco International,
a subsidiary of JT, holding the rest. Altria added it would make an initial $150 million in capital
contribution to Horizon.
The companies expect to jointly prepare U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
filings for the latest version of Ploom HTS products that are not currently commercialized
and submit pre-market tobacco product applications in the first half of 2025.
The announcement comes just days after Altria’s U.S.
rights to sell IQOS returned to peer Philip Morris International
Inc , which was spun off from Altria in 2008 when the group wanted to separate its U.S.
and overseas businesses.
Philip Morris agreed to pay $2.7 billion for the exclusive
right to sell IQOS heated tobacco products in the United States.
Late September, Altria exercised the option to be released from
its non-compete deal with Juul Labs Inc, almost four years
after buying a 35% stake in the company.
The FDA, in early July, put on hold its ban on sales of Juul’s e-cigarettes
in the U.S., after the health agency for a brief period banned
its products as data submitted by the company failed to show its products would be appropriate for public health.
