The situation is extremely worrying in Senegal, which is on the verge of a total shortage of kerosene. Planes could be grounded on the tarmac at Blaise Diagne International Airport for several weeks while the situation is resolved.
The shortage of kerosene is causing concern at the highest level. The Aviation Fuel Handling Company (SMCADY) has sounded the alarm and Senegal risks seeing the planes that are established or transiting through its territory grounded for several days at least.
This temporary shortage of kerosene will have a negative impact on air traffic and therefore on the country's economy. Like Guadeloupe and Martinique, Senegal is about to experience a total shortage that would force planes to cancel their flights.
Around twenty companies holding import licences are no longer able to obtain kerosene and are more exposed than ever.
The war between Ukraine and Russia, one of the world's largest crude exporters, and the technical shutdown of the Société Africaine de Raffinage (SAR), are causing a tense climate. Oil prices have had a strong impact on importing companies such as Total and Vivo Energy, which are the main customers of airlines, particularly in West Africa.
In Senegal, petroleum products are subsidized by the State. Kerosene, being an export product, is not affected by this subsidy.
Prices are evolving according to international rates. The Senegalese authorities and importing companies are unable to predict the outcome of this shortage which has not revealed its limits.
As of this Wednesday, April 20, the stock should be exhausted. The airlines' ordeal should continue for at least two weeks (from what we know exactly), but in all likelihood, there is no lasting solution on the horizon, even if Air Senegal has the possibility of maintaining its flights for at least two weeks maximum.
