Hapag-Lloyd has entered into a cooperation agreement with IKEA Supply Chain Operations to decarbonize Hapag-Lloyd container shipments from Asia, marking an important step towards a more sustainable shipping industry.

For the period March 2024 to February 2025, the two companies have agreed to use Hapag-Lloyd's highest product option for biofuels, "Ship Green 100", which is based on waste and residue-based biofuels instead of conventional marine fuel oil. The expected result for IKEA over this period is a reduction in CO2 emissions of around 100,000 tonnes.

Danny Smolders, Managing Director Global Sales at Hapag-Lloyd, said: "IKEA is one of our valued customers, known for its unwavering commitment to sustainable development. By joining forces, we are significantly reducing CO2e emissions.

"Ship Green is an important aspect of our decarbonization journey and brings us closer to our goal of net zero emissions by 2045."

IKEA's goal is to reduce the relative GHG emissions associated with the transportation of its products by 70% by 2030, and to use only zero-emission heavy-duty vehicles and ocean-going vessels by 2040.

Dariusz Mroczek, Category Transport Manager at IKEA Supply Chain Operations, said, "It's through efforts like this that we can reduce immediate shipping emissions in the short term. "However, biofuel is not the ultimate solution and we must continue to work together to make the necessary shift to zero-emission fuels and technologies."

This partnership represents a major step forward in the marine industry, where collaboration and innovation intersect to create a greener, more sustainable future for global shipping.

Hapag-Lloyd and IKEA are both committed to leading the way in environmentally-friendly practices, setting the benchmark for the industry. Hapag-Lloyd has launched the Ship Green product to offer its customers low-emission shipping.

Based on the biofuel, Hapag-Lloyd customers can choose between a 100%, 50% or 25% reduction in CO2e emissions. Ship Green is available for all shipments, including standard, refrigerated, hardtop and tanker equipment.
