Air France KLM Martinair Cargo and international freight forwarder AIT Worldwide Logistics have signed an agreement for 460 metric tons of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in 2023. The air transport group is multiplying its initiatives to move towards carbon-free aviation.

AIT Worldwide Logistics and Air France KLM Martinair Cargo have just signed an agreement in New York: the international freight forwarder has ordered 460 metric tons of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from the airline, and has committed to even higher volumes for 2024.

As a result, AIT Worldwide Logistics received a Sustainability Award from AFKLMP Cargo and joined the Air France KLM Martinair Cargo Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) program.

At 125 sites worldwide. Chicago-based AIT Worldwide Logistics also delivers by sea, land and rail. In existence for 40 years, the group has 125 sites worldwide (North America, Asia and Europe) and specializes in the aerospace, automotive, retail, food, healthcare, high-tech and industrial sectors. It offers customs clearance, warehouse management and white glove delivery (in the luxury goods sector).

3 areas of development

Working together. Air France KLM's commitment to sustainable development dates back to 2021 and has focused on 3 areas. In order to have its decarbonization journey validated by the SBTI (Science Based Targets Initiative), which guarantees the group targets in line with the 2015 Paris Accords to expect zero net emissions by 2050.

"Recognizing the challenges of a difficult sector, partnerships like this underscore the willingness of the complex ecosystem to work together to become a more sustainable air cargo industry. This is a step in the right direction towards our commitments to the SBTi validated targets for 2030 and the ultimate goal of achieving zero net CO₂ emissions by 2050," explains GertJan Roelands, Senior Vice President Commercial at AFKLMP Cargo.

Between 25% and 40% less CO2

The three levers chosen by Air France KLM to decarbonize air transport are fleet renewal, SAF (sustainable aviation fuels) and the implementation of operational measures.

  • New-generation aircraft will gradually join the AFKLMP fleet, some of them capable of emitting up to 20-25% less CO2. Specifically for freight, 4 A350Fs for Air France and 4 for Martinair will replace the dedicated fleet from the second half of 2026. These aircraft emit 40% less CO2 and are half as noisy as their predecessors.
  • A new option, goSAF. With 50 companies having joined the Sustainable Aviation Program (SAF) since its launch in 2020, AFKLMP Cargo has just launched a new option, goSAF, a new booking portal feature that enables customers to reduce their carbon emissions by ticking SAF directly;
  • Other avenues. More direct routes, fuel-saving procedures such as lighter aircraft, single-engine taxiing and continuous descent are among the purely operational measures being considered.

Or guaranteeing carbon-neutral ground operations by 2030. Air France KLM is committed to developing innovative solutions in terms of design, maintenance, engines and synthetic fuels....

AFKLMP Cargo also won the award for the most innovative freight solution at this year's Sustainable Flight Challenge organized by SkyTeam.
