DHL celebrates its 20th anniversary as Formula 1's official logistics partner. In phase with the event organizer, the group is multiplying more sustainable initiatives such as the use of 38 trucks running on biofuel and a new camper van using solar energy.

In 2024, logistics provider DHL celebrates 20 years of partnership with the Formula 1 World Championship. The two companies have also renewed their collaboration for several more years. The championship kicked off on February 29, 2024 with the first free practice sessions in Bahrain.

This large-scale season, covering 21 countries and five continents, includes three triple programs and five double programs, with Formula 1 returning to China for the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic.

DHL takes care of the logistical side, transporting up to 1,400 tonnes of freight materials for each race (race cars, tires, spare parts, fuel, broadcasting equipment, marketing and hospitality equipment).

In 2019, Formula 1 announced its "Net Zero Carbon" goal. This had echoed DHL's ambition, which in 2017 had set itself the same goal for all logistics-related carbon emissions by 2050.

"The two companies share a strong commitment to sustainable development goals and a common vision for making sport greener and more efficient," says Arjan Sissing, DHL's Global Head of Brand Marketing.

Following the successful introduction of biofuel-powered trucks last year, the number of trucks has doubled this year to a total of 37 vehicles. According to the transport and logistics company, each truck reduces carbon emissions by an average of 83% compared with a diesel truck.

In addition, the provider has streamlined the schedule to reduce the distance freight travels between events, used more fuel-efficient Boeing 777 aircraft (enabling a 17% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to traditional aircraft, according to its figures), and will employ a new motorhome equipped with solar panels and recharging stations.

"We're constantly exploring ways of achieving Formula 1's Net Zero goal," says Paul Fowler, Head of Global Motorsports Logistics at DHL Global Forwarding.
