For Italy, the path to breaking energy independence from Russia passes through Algeria. A new gas supply contract is expected to be signed during Mario Draghi's second visit to Algiers in less than four months.
Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi (photo) began a visit to Algiers on Monday, July 18, where he is expected to sign a new gas supply contract to reduce his country's heavy energy dependence on Russia.
As a sign of the importance of this visit, Mr Draghi is accompanied by five ministers (Foreign Affairs, Interior, Justice, Ecological Transition and Family Affairs) who are due to take part in the 4e Italy-Algeria intergovernmental summit.
The Italian Prime Minister, who had already visited Algiers last April, and members of his government will hold a series of talks with their Algerian counterparts and sign several cooperation agreements, before meeting the President, Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
The highlight of the visit will be the signing of a new contract providing for the increase of Algerian gas deliveries to Italy via the Transmed gas pipeline.
According to the Italian press, Algiers should supply Rome with an additional 6 billion cubic meters of gas in 2022, making a total of 27 billion cubic meters.
Last April, Algerian hydrocarbon giant Sonatrach and its Italian counterpart ENI signed a gas supply contract, the details of which have not been disclosed.
During a state visit by the Algerian president to Italy at the end of June, the two groups also signed another agreement for the development of gas fields and the launch of a pilot project for the production of green hydrogen in Algeria.
Italy imports about 95% of its natural gas needs, of which about 40% (29 billion cubic meters) came from Russia in 2021.
