Swedish giant Ikea has just launched a container home. The aim is to demonstrate that it is possible to live in a small space.
In 2020, Ikea began designing micro mobile homes. With a surface area of 17 m2, they were manufactured by Escape and fitted out by Ikea. Their special feature: they were eco-responsible and energy self-sufficient. They cost around 50,000 euros.
Today, Ikea is stepping up a gear with its smart living project and its 25 m2 container house. The challenge is to optimize a small space. Kitchenette, bedroom, living room, bathroom - everything has been thought out to the millimeter.
Small spaces and lettuces
More generally, the idea comes at a time when 55% of the world's population lives in cities, in small spaces, a figure that could rise to 80% by 2050. With this container house, Ikea aims to demonstrate that it is possible to live in a small, compact space.
In retrospect, this is not the Swedish giant's first foray into containers. Also in 2020, it decided to use containers to grow lettuces. Inside, a hydroponic cultivation system contained four levels of plants, or up to 3,600 heads of lettuce.
