La récente crise sanitaire a fait exploser la demande de fret aérien en Afrique, notamment avec le développement du commerce en ligne. Cela implique la nécessité pour les compagnies aériennes africaines d’augmenter leurs capacités d’expédition.
Ethiopian Airlines a annoncé l’achèvement de la conversion en avion-cargo de l’un de ses trois Boeing 767-300.
La reconfiguration s’est opérée dans les installations de MRO du transporteur localisées à Addis-Abeba, avec l’assistance technique du groupe Israël Aerospace Industries (IAI), l’un des leaders mondiaux dans le domaine.
Selon le communiqué de la compagnie publié le 12 octobre 2022, l’opération lui permettra de remplacer les vieux avions de ligne et d’augmenter ses capacités d’expédition de fret.
« En plus de nos dernières flottes de cargos, les avions B767 convertis augmenteront nos destinations de fret locales et internationales avec plus de capacités de chargement. Nous avons travaillé à l’expansion de nos opérations de fret alors que la demande devrait augmenter avec l’établissement d’un centre de commerce électronique à Addis-Abeba », a expliqué Mesfin Tasew, le PDG.
Un second aéronef en cours de conversion devrait être prêt d’ici quelques mois. En pleine crise sanitaire, Ethiopian a été l’une des rares compagnies restées en activité. Elle a expédié vaccins, équipements de protection individuelle (EPI) et autres à travers le monde, ce qui a développé sa branche fret.
La compagnie a depuis lors agrandi son réseau de distribution, couvrant désormais plus de 130 destinations dans le monde entier, avec une capacité de soute et 67 services de fret dédiés.
