With persistent pressure on the road network, multimodality has become the preferred option for governments to relieve congestion and keep traffic flowing smoothly.

Algeria's Minister of Transport, Youcef Cherfa, has announced a plan to create internal maritime links for passenger transport.

"To give concrete expression to policies to develop the maritime passenger transport mode, several measures have been taken to create transport lines between coastal towns, to enable citizens to travel via ferries that comply with technical and safety standards and can access ports."

The service will be provided by the Entreprise Nationale de Transport Maritime des Voyageurs (ENTMV), the public entity in charge of ferry transport.

The initiative is part of the government's policy to strengthen the multimodality of the national transport system. According to Youcef Cherfa, its implementation will "relieve road traffic congestion".

ENTMV already operates sea routes to international destinations, including France (Marseille), Spain (Alicante, Barcelona, Valencia) and Italy (Genoa), which remains a cheaper option than air travel for many middle-income travelers.

The impact of such a measure will therefore also be financial, as it should help reduce transport costs for passengers.
