Le rail est devenu une meilleure voie pour le transport de masse dans plusieurs pays, plus en particulier au Zimbabwe qui en raison de son état d’enclavement, fait transiter ses échanges transfrontaliers via les ports voisins.
Des membres du gouvernement zimbabwéen accompagnés de certains responsables de l’autorité nationale des chemins de fer, ont finalisé un accord portant sur l’acquisition de véhicules ferroviaires rapporte la presse locale.
L’accord signé entre les chemins de fer nationaux du Zimbabwe (NRZ) et Rites Limited, société publique indienne spécialisée dans le transport ferroviaire, consiste en la livraison de neuf locomotives, 350 wagons de marchandises et un nombre non spécifié de DMU (trains à plusieurs unités fonctionnant au diesel).
Ceci fait suite à un partenariat signé entre les deux entités en mars 2022, visant à permettre à NRZ de bénéficier de l’expertise technique de la firme indienne en matière de conception, d’ingénierie et de formation.
Le contrat intervient notamment dans un contexte où le Zimbabwe, privé de façade maritime, a fait part de son intention de booster le niveau des échanges commerciaux avec le Mozambique en misant sur le développement du transport ferroviaire.
Courant mars, les présidents Emmerson Mnangagwa et Filipe Nyusi avaient mis en service 4 locomotives diesel-électriques et 150 wagons acquis par le Mozambique en Inde.
