La présidente tanzanienne Samia Suluhu Hassan posait le 30 octobre la première pierre des travaux de construction du nouvel aéroport de Msalato, situé à 12 km de Dodoma.
Le projet qui date de plusieurs années a été initié pour doter la nouvelle capitale située à 441 km de Dar es-Salaam, d’infrastructures de transport adaptées. L’actuel aéroport de la ville n’a en effet pas la capacité de recevoir des gros-porteurs.
Les travaux prévus pour durer 4 ans sont confiés à un groupement d’entreprises composé de Sinohydro Corporation, Beijing Sinoaero Construction Engineering Co et China Jiangxi International Economic and Technical Cooperation Co.
L’infrastructure nécessitera un investissement de 329,47 millions USD selon la Banque africaine de développement (BAD), le principal bailleur qui en cofinance les travaux à hauteur de 67,3%.
Le reste sera fourni par l’Africa Growing Together Fund (AGTF), un mécanisme de cofinancement de la République populaire de Chine (15,2%) et du gouvernement de la République-Unie de Tanzanie (17,5%).
Achevée, la phase 1 du projet permettra au nouvel aéroport d’accueillir 1,7 million de passagers par an.
