Variety, writing that the ‘cracked jukebox musical’ had an audacious concept, ‘but in a basic way it’s an overly cautious sequel.’
IndieWire’s David Ehrlich took a bit of a harsher tone,
saying the 138-minute flick is ‘boring, flat, and a criminal waste of
Lady Gaga,’ adding it feels ‘bad on purpose.’
He added: ‘Phillips has created a corporate pop spectacle that all but demands to be seen as something else.
‘Here is a movie that perversely denies audiences everything they’ve been conditioned
to want from it; gently at first, and then later with the unmistakable
hostility of a knife to the gut.

and its cinematic depth, in breaking away from the cookie cutter
nature of sequels to introduce a musical element not present in the first film, with Lady Gaga joining the
franchise.
‘Joker 2 was amazing,’ one user said, adding that
it was ‘100% as divisive as people are making it out to be.
I love that the film didn’t try to be a traditional sequel,
and fully committed to the storytelling they presented.
It never deviated to be a film full of Easter eggs or any

is going to bomb, man.’ I go, ‘This is the worst thing I’ve ever seen.’
‘We were talking about it at lunch, and we’d go, ‘What is the plot?
Is there a plot? I don’t know, I think he falls in love with her in the prison?’ It’s
not even hate-watchable. That’s how terrible it is.’

the cookie cutter nature of sequels to introduce a musical element not present in the first film, with Lady Gaga joining the franchise.
‘Joker 2 was amazing,’ one user said, adding that it was ‘100% as divisive as people are making
it out to be. I love that the film didn’t try to
be a traditional sequel, and fully committed to the storytelling
they presented. It never deviated to be a film full of Easter eggs
or any other crowd pleasing aspects.’
Another user said, ‘I kinda loved Joker 2. I loved how it
was structured as a meta-exploration of the first film’s fandom and the musical

It is not clear when Apollonia’s relationship
with Prince began or ended as he was dating another one of the stars of Purple Rain during the making of the
film, Susan Moonsie.
Prince and Beyonce famously joined forces onstage at the 2004 Grammy Awards,
performing a medley that included his iconic 1984 single Purple Rain.
Their duet also included her fan favorite number Crazy In Love,
which saw him accompany her on the electric guitar.
Afterwards, Prince gave an interview in which he shared his appraisal of Beyonce’s musical abilities when they worked together.
‘I was really curious as to how much she knew musically, and I was really pleased to find out that
she knew a lot about scales – Mixolydian scales and
Egyptian styles and different things like that,’ he said.
‘And I was just trying to show her some chords
on the piano and help her to respect the fact that if she learns piano à la Aretha
Franklin and Ray Charles and things like that, the sky’s the
limit as to what she could do, ’cause she’s so very talented.’
Prince died of an accidental overdose in 2016 at
the age of just 57.

of 31% and a critic score of 32%.
The sequel has been roundly criticized for being a musical
and ‘ignoring’ the DC fanbase – with an agent familiar with director
Todd Phillips’ process telling Variety he ‘wanted nothing to
do with DC’ during the making of the film, with DC bosses
James Gunn and Peter Safran notably absent from the film’s LA premiere afterparty last month.
A source said: ‘If the first movie was about some down-on-his-luck, mentally ill
guy in a downtrodden city, it makes maybe $150
[million] worldwide. Not a billion. People showed up because that guy was
Joker.’
In an apparent snub by Phillips, the opening sequence of
the film does not include a DC Studios logo.
A Warner spokesman added that a DC logo appears at the end of
the Joker sequel, while Phillips declined to comment to the publication.
Several frictions are said to have developed between Phillips, DC and Warner- with
claims that Michael DeLuca, Chairperson of
Warner Bros. Entertainment, and CEO Pamela Abdy seemed ‘unwilling’ to say no to
Phillips due to his huge past successes.
It is claimed Phillips would ‘only’ speak with DeLuca and Abdy rather than Gunn and Safran – who took
control of DC two months before production began on Joker 2 in December 2022.
Gunn and Safran did attend the first director’s cut screening for the studio but Phillips fueled rift speculation when he told a reporter:
‘With all due respect to them, this is kind of a Warner Bros.
movie.’
Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav also met with Phillips shortly after
WarnerMedia and Discovery merged in April 2022 and was ‘open to filming in Los Angeles if the director would make the sequel at a lower price point.’
The studio wanted to film in London which would have cost around 20 per cent less.
A source directly involved with the film recently shared: ‘The one thing
about genre stuff: If you don’t listen and pay attention to what the fan expectations are, you’re going to fail’; director Todd Phillips seen with
Gaga and Phoenix at the LA premiere September 30
However, Phillips insisted on filming in LA with
the budget remaining static.
A Warner spokesman told the publication the studio ‘supported the decision to film
in Los Angeles’.

Insiders also claim studio bosses did not want to premiere the film at
the Venice Film Festival, but Phillips pushed back – with a Warner spokesman saying the studio ‘fully supported the decision to bring the film to Venice.
Along with Gaga and Phoenix, other stars that had appeared in the sequel include Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Zazie Beatz and Steve Coogan.

LUXEMBOURG, Oct 7 (Reuters) – Germany’s economic model is
not broken but Europe’s biggest economy has lost competitiveness over the past decade, German Finance Minister Christian Lindner
said on Monday.
“We can’t be satisfied with the economic developments in Germany,”
he told journalists ahead of a Eurogroup meeting.
The German economy is expected to contract by 0.2% in 2024, an economy ministry spokesperson said on Monday, cutting the forecast from a previous projection of 0.3% growth this year.
If realised, this would be the second consecutive year of contraction for Germany’s economy, which was the weakest among its large euro zone
peers last year with a 0.3% decline in gross domestic product.
Lindner said the government was introducing supply-side measures to try to return the economy
to growth.
“After these reforms, Germany will have more competitiveness again,” Lindner said, adding that the growth initiative was just a first step
for an economic turnaround, “but we have to build on it.”
AMBITION NEEDED
Lindner said “ambition” was needed to keep EU public finances in order,
or to put them back in order where necessary.
“I can only encourage everyone to implement structural reforms and to make unpopular decisions,” Lindner said.
“What seems to be unpopular at the moment is the willingness to take responsibility for the next generation and for the stability of the European Union as a whole.”
Lindner said he could not comment on the French budget
plans because he had not had the chance to talk with
his French colleagues yet, but he would do so on Monday evening.
“We should all realise that the credibility of public finances vis-à-vis the capital markets is not to be trifled with,” Lindner
said.
“We must credibly reduce our deficits and our debt so that we can continue to finance ourselves well and in a stable manner.”

Australian politicians are almost always opting to fly with
Qantas on taxpayer-funded trips, despite Virgin offering cheaper tickets.
Federal MPs flew with the national carrier for 80 per cent of work trips last year despite
it not always being the cheapest route, according to travel data provided to the government.
While politicians and their staffers are required
to book the cheapest flight, it also has to be the most efficient, with
Qantas offering the most routes between major cities.
MPs are banned from accruing frequent flyer points on taxpayer-funded trips like ordinary Aussies can, but they
can can receive lifetime status credits, which allows access to airport lounges and flight upgrades.
‘How else can one explain the extraordinary dominance of Qantas in securing bookings by parliamentarians and their staff?’ Myriam Robin wrote
in an opinion piece for the Australian Financial Review.
‘There’s nothing like accruing status credits on someone else’s dime.’
Transport Minister Catherine King has since committed to a
review of flight bookings by government officials which will be conducted by the Department of Finance this year, despite there being just two months left of 2024.
Politicians’ preference for Qantas may also be put down to the airline’s exclusive invite-only ‘Chairman’s Lounge’.

March 24 (Reuters) – Marlboro maker Philip Morris International Inc is working on options
to exit the Russian market, citing a complex and rapidly changing regulatory and operating environment in the country following its invasion of Ukraine.
The company, which garnered around 6% its net revenue
from Russia in 2021, said on Thursday it has discontinued sale of several
cigarette products and canceled all product launches
for the year in Russia.

memberships as calls grow to refer Anthony Albanese over the
perks he took from the airline.
Gift disclosure logs for the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) leadership positions show commissioners are all part of Australia’s ‘most exclusive club’ the Chairman’s Lounge membership
extended by invite only by the Qantas chair.
This has raised concerns over how impartial the body would be when dealing with Qantas matters.
If Mr Albanese has requested flight upgrades from former Qantas CEO Alan Joyce directly, as reported in a new book, he may
have fallen foul of the strict Ministerial Code of Conduct which prohibits ministers from seeking
‘any kind of benefit’
Commissioner Paul Brereton declared Chairman’s Lounge membership in 2023, as
did the CEO Philip Reed and deputy commissioners Jaala Hinchcliffe and
Nicole Rose, Sky News reported on Wednesday.
Deputy commissioners Ben Gauntlett and Kylie Kilgour declared their membership in February 2024, which means it was after the NACC began operation in July 2023.

A job ad for the Canberra Qantas Chairman’s Lounge sets out the requirements to serve the high and mighty
Applicants must ‘have experience working in a fine dining environment and the ability to work a seven- day rotating roster.
The claims Albanese received 22 upgrades from economy when booking Qantas flight by personally requesting them
from Mr Joyce are made in a new book The Chairman’s Lounge by former Australian Financial Review columnist Joe Aston.
Aston alleged Mr Albanese directly contacted
Mr Joyce while in his various parliamentary jobs, which included Minister
for Transport to ask for special upgrades that only the CEO
could dole out for himself or his family.
According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’ 11 of the 22 flights Mr Albanese received
upgrades for were ‘privately funded’ and included overseas trips to Rome, London, Los
Angeles and Honolulu.
The book also revealed that as well as son Nathan having
a ‘plus one’ Chairman’s Lounge membership Mr Albanese’s
partner Jodie Haydon did as well.
Mr Albanese insisted on Tuesday that all were ‘declared in the appropriate way’.

‘That´s a double whammy that´s very difficult to recover from,’ said Paul Dergarabedian, the senior media analyst for Comscore.
‘The biggest issue of all is the reported budget. A
$40 or $50 million opening for a less expensive movie would
be a solid debut.’
Joker: Folie à Deux cost at least twice as much as the first film to
produce, though reported figures vary at exactly how pricey it was to make.
Phillips told Variety that it was less than the reported $200 million; Others have it pegged at $190
million. Warner Bros. released the film in 4,102 locations in North America.
About 12.5 percent of its domestic total came from 415 IMAX screens.
Internationally, it’s earned $81.1 million from 25,788 screens,
bringing its total global earnings estimate
to $121.1 million. In the next two weeks, Joker 2 will also open in Japan and China.
Second place went to Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s The Wild Robot, which added
$18.7 million in its second weekend, bringing its domestic
total to nearly $64 million. Globally, it’s made over $100 million. Warner Bros.’ Beetlejuice Beetlejuice took third
place in weekend five, Paramount’s Transformers One landed in fourth and Universal and Blumhouse’s Speak No Evil rounded out the top five.
The other big new release of the weekend, Lionsgate’s White Bird, flopped with just $1.5 million from
just over 1,000 locations, despite an A+ CinemaScore.
Overall, the weekend is up from the same frame last year, but Joker’s start
is an unwelcome twist for theater owners hoping to narrow
the box office deficit.

committed in the first. It´s also a musical, with elaborately imagined song and dance numbers to old standards.
Gaga even released a companion album called ”Harlequin,’ alongside the film.

In cruder terms, it´s been called a ‘middle finger.’ But fans often ignore the advice of critics,
especially when it comes to opening their wallets to see
revered comic book characters on the big screen.
‘They took a swing for the fences,’ Dergarabedian said.
‘But except for a couple of outliers, audiences in 2024 seem to want to know what they´re getting
when they´re going to the theater. They want the tried and true,
the familiar.’
Deadline editor Anthony D´Alessandro thinks the problem started with
the idea to make the Joker sequel a musical. ‘No fan of the original movie wanted to see
a musical sequel,’ he wrote on Saturday.
The first film was also divisive and the subject of much discourse,
then about whether it might send the wrong
message to the wrong type of person. And yet people still flocked to see what
the fuss was about. Joker went on to pick
up 11 Oscar nominations, including best picture and best director, and three wins.
It also made over $1 billion and was the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time,
until this summer when Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine took the crown.
Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S.
and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore. Final
domestic figures will be released Monday.

SAN FRANCISCO/SEOUL, March 23 (Reuters) – LG Energy Solution (LGES),
a supplier for electric car makers Tesla
and Lucid, said on Thursday in Korea it plans to invest 1.7 trillion Korean won ($1.4 billion)
to build a battery factory in Arizona by 2024 to meet demand from “prominent startups” and other North American customers.
This will be its first U.S. factory to make cylindrical cells, a type of battery that has been used in Tesla and Lucid vehicles, LGES said.
Construction will begin in the second quarter
of 2022, with mass production to start in 2024 with production capacity of 11 gigawatt hours, LGES said in a
statement.
Earlier, Reuters reported that potential customers would include EV makers Tesla,
Lucid and Proterra and Philip Morris , maker of IQOS heated-tobacco sticks, among others.
The report cited people familiar with the matter.
LGES said in a statement that it plans to consider
securing additional production capacity at its Arizona factory in the future.
“The Arizona factory could add further production capacity in the future as we are seeing growing demand for cylindrical batteries from various customers, including automakers and power tool makers,” said an official at LGES.
On Tuesday, Tesla Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk said battery
production would be “the limiting factor” for vehicle production in two to three years.
He has called on suppliers to raise production, while Tesla starts making cells itself.
Tesla, Lucid and Proterra did not immediately respond to
requests for comment. Philip Morris declined
to comment.
Japan’s Panasonic Corp, a Tesla supplier, along with Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd, is also looking to invest billions of
dollars to build a factory to make a new type of electric vehicle (EV) battery
for Tesla, public broadcaster NHK reported this month.
Panasonic is looking at building the factory in either Oklahoma or Kansas, not far from Tesla’s new Texas vehicle plant, NHK reported.
Lucid Chief Financial Officer Sherry House told Reuters last month the company, which has a car factory in Arizona,
had signed multi-year supply agreements with two battery suppliers, and the agreement
“does have some capacity coming from state-side cell lines.”
She did not identify the companies. Lucid sources
batteries from LGES and Samsung SDI.
LGES, which raised more than $10 billion in its initial public offering in Korea in January,
has announced a flurry of battery joint ventures with GM and Stellantis in the United States and Canada.
In August, U.S. President Joe Biden signed an executive order aimed
at making half of all new vehicles sold in 2030 electric.

to exit the Russian market, citing a complex and rapidly changing regulatory and operating
environment in the country following its invasion of Ukraine.
