Au moins 15 personnes ont été tuées après qu’un bateau de passagers a été pris par la marée et a chaviré à Lagos, la capitale économique du Nigeria, ont indiqué dimanche les services d’urgence.
Le drame s’est produit vendredi soir, deux jours après la mort de deux personnes dans un autre accident de bateau dans cette ville de plus de 20 millions d’habitants.
“Il y avait 16 passagers à bord au moment de l’accident”, a déclaré à l’AFP Ibrahim Farinloye, de l’Agence nationale de gestion des urgences (NEMA). Selon lui, quatre corps ont été retrouvés samedi, et dimanche les secours ont repêché 11 autres cadavres. Le seizième passager n’avait pas été retrouvé dimanche après-midi.
Selon Sarat Braimah, directrice régionale de l’Autorité des voies navigables de l’État de Lagos (LASWA), le bateau “a enfreint le règlement […] concernant les voyages tardifs en prenant la mer à 19h45”. La marée a fait dériver puis chavirer le bateau, a-t-elle indiqué, ajoutant que les passagers n’avaient pas de gilets de sauvetage.
La ville de Lagos s’est développée sur un site lagunaire en bordure de l’océan Atlantique. Les accidents de bateau – souvent surchargés et mal entretenus – sont fréquents sur les voies navigables nigérianes, notamment pendant la saison des pluies.
Mercredi, deux personnes ont été tuées et 15 autres secourues lorsque leur bateau a chaviré à Ikorodu, dans les environs de Lagos.
