Arrivé de Saint-Nazaire, un paquebot géant, le MSC World Europa, est amarré au terminal croisière du port de Doha pour servir d’« hôtel flottant » pendant la Coupe du monde. Il est inauguré ce dimanche soir.
Il offre une vue impeccable sur la « skyline » de Doha et, accessoirement, sur l’une des huit enceintes de la Coupe du monde, le stade 974, ainsi nommé car il compte autant de containers dans sa structure (ce chiffre est également l’indicatif téléphonique du Qatar).
Il mesure 333 m, peut accueillir 6 762 passagers et dispose de 20 bars, 13 restaurants et 7 piscines. Ce géant des mers, livré le mois dernier par les Chantiers de l’Atlantique, à Saint-Nazaire, est arrivé dans l’émirat le 10 novembre, après une traversée de deux semaines depuis la France, en passant par le canal de Suez.
Amarré au terminal croisière du port de Doha, en attendant ses premiers clients-supporters, le week-end prochain, le MSC World Europa colle à la démesure déroutante de la Coupe du monde que s’apprête à organiser le petit émirat (20 novembre-18 décembre).
Propulsé au gaz naturel liquéfié
Inauguré ce dimanche soir en présence de nombreux invités internationaux, dans des conditions de sécurité très strictes, le plus gros paquebot européen actuel est le premier des trois « hôtels flottants » qui doivent compléter l’offre – onéreuse – d’hébergement aux supporters et visiteurs attendus pendant le tournoi. La petite péninsule du Golfe en attend plus d’un million sur son sol durant les 29 jours de compétition.
Alors que le Qatar est soumis à de virulentes critiques, notamment sur l’impact écologique de cette Coupe du monde, l’armateur italo-suisse du paquebot a axé sa communication, lors de sa mise en service, sur ses caractéristiques particulières, puisqu’il est le premier de ce genre propulsé au gaz naturel liquéfié (GNL).
« Le MSC World Europa est le navire le moins émetteur de CO2 de toute l’industrie des croisières », a également plaidé Laurent Castaing, le directeur des Chantiers de l’Atlantique. Consulté dimanche soir, le site de réservation d’hébergements de Qatar 2022 n’affichait plus de cabines disponibles sur le paquebot.
