Premier producteur africain de cuivre, la RDC assure 70 % de la production mondiale de cobalt et s’apprête à produire du lithium. Alors que les besoins mondiaux pour ces métaux augmentent, le pays s’active pour y répondre, aussi bien en matière de production minière que d’infrastructures.
En RDC, les délais de passage des camions au niveau du principal poste frontalier avec la Zambie (Kasumbalesa) ont plus que triplé depuis 2019. Pour réduire ce temps d’attente lié à l’augmentation du trafic sur la période, Kinshasa travaille à la construction d’une deuxième route Lubumbashi – Kasumbalesa, selon une source proche du dossier citée mardi 12 juillet par Reuters.
Si cette information se confirme, il s’agirait d’un développement cohérent avec la volonté du gouvernement congolais de jouer un rôle plus prépondérant dans l’approvisionnement mondial en métaux stratégiques, comme le lithium, le cobalt et le cuivre.
Ce sont d’ailleurs ces deux derniers métaux qui sont en grande partie responsables du nombre plus important de camions en route vers la Zambie, point de passage de la production congolaise vers les marchés en Asie, en Europe ou en Amérique du Nord.
Ces dernières années en effet, plusieurs projets miniers sont entrés en production pour répondre à la hausse attendue de la demande mondiale, à l’image de la mine de cuivre-cobalt de Deziwa début 2020, ou plus récemment du complexe de cuivre Kamoa-Kakula en mai 2021.
S’agissant de ce dernier, son propriétaire Ivanhoe Mines prévoit une montée en puissance progressive jusqu’à 800 000 tonnes d’ici quelques années.
