Avec l’aide de bailleurs, l’État mise sur un renforcement des capacités pour relever le défi de l’accroissement des volumes.
La République démocratique du Congo (RDC) a obtenu un don de 18 millions $ de l’Agence japonaise de coopération internationale (JICA) pour réaliser des travaux de réhabilitation au port de Matadi.
Le financement, octroyé au profit de la Société Commerciale des Transports et des Ports (SCTP ex. ONATRA), servira « à réhabiliter l’espace de stockage des conteneurs dans le parc à conteneurs, et ses installations connexes ; améliorer la sécurité des travaux de manutention de conteneurs en améliorant le revêtement du parc à conteneurs et en introduisant un système d’exploitation du terminal (TOS) au port de Matadi », peut-on lire dans un communiqué en date du 13 juillet, publié par la représentation de la JICA en RDC.
Le projet, selon la JICA permettra d’anticiper sur les prévisions qui annoncent une hausse du trafic qui pourrait atteindre d’ici 2030 le double des capacités actuelles de la plateforme.
Érigé sur la rive gauche du fleuve Congo, le port de Matadi, actuellement plus grande plateforme portuaire de la RDC, est construit avec des installations nautiques à capacité limitée.
Le débit peu profond du bassin portuaire ne permet pas de recevoir des megaships et oblige les chargeurs congolais à faire transiter une bonne partie de leurs expéditions maritimes via les ports voisins, notamment de Pointe-Noire, de Brazzaville, Dar es-Salaam et de Mombasa.
