La société de conseil en énergie Wood Mackenzie a estimé, en février dernier, que le champ Venus sur lequel du pétrole et du gaz associé ont été découverts par TotalEnergies abriterait au moins 3 milliards de barils de brut récupérable.
La Namibie pourrait rejoindre l’Organisation des pays exportateurs de pétrole (OPEP) si les récentes découvertes de brut annoncées par les groupes TotalEnergies et Shell s’avéraient significatives, a rapporté Bloomberg mercredi 26 octobre, citant un responsable au ministère des Mines et de l’Energie.
TotalEnergies et Shell avaient annoncé, début 2022, avoir fait des découvertes « significatives » de pétrole au large de la Namibie, dans le cadre de leurs campagnes d’exploration pétrolière offshore dans le bassin d’Orange. Les deux majors pétrolières avaient aussi indiqué qu’elles procédaient à des évaluations pour déterminer la taille de leurs découvertes de manière plus précise.
Fin février dernier, la société de conseil en énergie Wood Mackenzie a estimé que le champ Venus sur lequel du brut et du gaz associé ont été découverts par TotalEnergies au large de la Namibie abriterait « au moins 3 milliards de barils de brut récupérable ».
D’après Wood Mackenzie, les ressources en place dépassent celles des champs Girassol et Dalia de TotalEnergies dans le bloc 17 en Angola, ainsi que celles des champs Akpo et Egina au Nigeria, ce qui fait du champ Venus l’une des plus importantes découvertes de pétrole jamais réalisées en Afrique subsaharienne.
« Si les gisements s’avèrent suffisamment importants pour un développement commercial, l’adhésion à l’OPEP sera l’une des options envisagées par la Namibie », a déclaré Maggy Shino (photo), commissaire au pétrole au ministère namibien des Mines et de l’Energie, à Bloomberg.
Outre les gisements offshore, des découvertes de pétrole onshore ont été aussi annoncées ces dernières années en Namibie, qui pourrait devenir le prochain eldorado du pétrole en Afrique.
