Les deux États aux économies historiquement complémentaires, le Bénin et le Nigeria affichent depuis peu leur volonté d’étaler leurs échanges commerciaux. Une dynamique qui se fonde entre autres sur la croissance des infrastructures de transport.
Selon plusieurs médias nigérians des négociations sont en cours entre les autorités nigérianes et béninoises pour mettre en œuvre le projet ferroviaire devant relier les deux États par les villes de Parakou et Ilorin. Des équipes techniques des deux pays se sont rencontrées à Abuja, pour réfléchir sur la phase de conception de cette infrastructure qui devrait s’étendre sur 234 km.
Le projet évoqué pour la première fois en 2017, à l’occasion d’un forum organisé par Africa Finance Corporation, avait été initié par le groupe Pétrolin qui avait aussi conçu le plan d’extension du réseau ferroviaire béninois de Parakou vers Niamey (Niger).
Par la suite resté il est resté au point mort, plombé par les litiges judiciaires ayant entouré le projet de chemin de fer Benin-Niger. « La ligne Parakou-Ilorin serait à écartement standard (SGR) et devrait s’intégrer au réseau entre le Bénin et le Niger » avait indiqué Samuel Dossou-Aworet, président du groupe Pétrolin.
En dépit de la fermeture des frontières, les exportations nigérianes vers le Bénin sont estimées à 96,2 millions $ en 2020, alors que le Bénin a vendu pour 15,9 millions $ de biens au Nigeria.
L’interdépendance des deux économies pourrait être davantage confortée avec ce projet, notamment dans le contexte de mise œuvre de la Zlecaf. Le projet intervient aussi alors que se réalise le plan d’interconnexion ferroviaire des États membres de l’Union Africaine à l’horizon 2063.
