In November 2023, the Comité National Routier delivered its verdict on road freight transport (TRM) costs for companies in the sector in 2023. Unsurprisingly, very high inflation is having a considerable impact on their balance sheets, and 2024 looks no better.

"Road haulage companies have been faced with record cost inflation for the past two years", announced Alexis Giret, Director of the Comité National Routier (CNR), on November 22 during a conference at the Solutrans industrial vehicle show at Lyon Eurexpo. "All the cost items of a truck are affected".

First and foremost, wages and charges for driving personnel will rise by an average of +16.4% between 2021 and 2023, due to successive increases in minimum wage agreements (wages and travel allowances).

For 2023 alone, according to the CNR, wage increases in TRM companies reached 8.1% in long-haul and 8% in regional transport. It could reach 10.1% in 2024 for long-distance haulage, and 9.7% for regional haulage (*).

Wages account for 30% of a transport company's expenses.

Other increases over the past two years include

  • Inflation in overheads (+15.3%),
  • Vehicle maintenance and repair costs (+13.4%),
  • Increase in toll rates (+6.8%).

In 2023 alone, the cost of a diesel truck, excluding fuel, rose by 6.3%.

  • For a long-haul articulated unit, it increased by 6.1%,
  • For a regional articulated unit, it increased by 6.3%,
  • For a regional distribution carrier, it increased by 6.2%.

In 2024, CNR forecasts inflation in the cost of a truck at 6.8%, all types of transport combined. This will rise to 7% for regional distribution forwarders.

Inflation record du prix des matériels roulants. Mais ce qui a le plus augmenté en 2023, c’est le prix des véhicules : le CNR estime la hausse à 13 % ! La hausse devrait être moins élevée en 2024 (+2,4 %).

Cost of ownership :

  • +4% for articulated units in 2023,
  • +3.7% for carriers in 2023.

CNR forecasts :

  • +2.9% for articulated units in 2024,
  • +3% for carriers in 2024.

Maintenance costs rose by 4.4% in 2023. Pneumatics in particular rose by 7%. These costs should continue to rise, reaching +5.2% in 2024.
