Gordon Birrell, BP Executive Vice President for Production and Operations, who was accompanied by Emil Ismayilov, Senior Vice President for Mauritania and Senegal, and Massaer Cissé, Vice President and Country Director for Senegal, were received in audience by President Macky Sall..
Congratulating President Macky Sall on his recent election as President of the African Union and the Senegalese football team on their victory at the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations, Mr. Birrell provided President Macky Sall and Minister of Petroleum and Energy Madame Sophie Gladima with an update on the significant progress made on Phase 1 of the Grand Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) project, noting that the development is now over 70% complete.
Discussions with the President and Minister also focused on growth opportunities, including ongoing efforts to advance the potential next phase of development – GTA Phase 2.
Nevertheless, BP continues to work with its partners on the development of the national "Gas to Power" project of the Yakaar Teranga gas field on the Cayar Offshore Profond block and its potential to secure Senegal's energy for decades to come.
“We are working with our partners at GTA, Kosmos Energy, Petrosen and SMH, to safely deliver first gas and develop Phase 2 of the project,” said Gordon Birrell, Executive Vice President of Production and Operations.
Continuing his remarks, he said: "In line with BP's resilient hydrocarbon strategy, we also continue to seek opportunities to optimise Yakaar Teranga, which represents a significant and exciting opportunity to provide domestic energy in Senegal and to replace more carbon-intensive forms of energy in the electricity sector."
BP and the GTA Partnership’s continued support for the local content agenda was also discussed at the meeting. This includes supporting national businesses, investing in sustainable development projects that benefit communities neighbouring the GTA project and developing national talent.
In line with the long-term capacity building vision for the GTA gas project, 48 national technicians from Senegal and Mauritania are studying in the UK, where they are halfway through their four-year technician training course, all funded by BP.
To date, BP's activity in Senegal has generated more than 2 jobs and more than 000 national companies support its activities in Senegal.
