Algeria: Port of Oran traffic down 5% by 2023

One of Algeria's main port hubs, the Port of Oran is a strategic maritime gateway for supplies and trade to the country's central and northern regions.

The Algerian port of Oran will see a 5% drop in activity in 2023, with traffic of 10.1 million tonnes, compared with 10.6 million tonnes in 2022.

These volumes included non-hydrocarbon exports of clinker (2,194,878 tonnes), cement (429,873 tonnes) and various ferrous metals (489,276 tonnes). Solid bulk exports totaled 1,074,904 tonnes.

Imports included cereals of all varieties (2,306,996 tonnes), animal feed (1,648,655 tonnes) and liquid bulk (159,174 tonnes), mainly soy-based vegetable oils.

The miscellaneous goods category covers imports and exports of ferrous products and packaging materials, with volumes of 2,740,308 tonnes, compared with 2,464,870 tonnes in 2022, an increase of 11%.

Container traffic increased by 21%, with a total of 246,682 TEUs, compared with 203,294 TEUs the previous year. The gross weight of containerized goods transported was estimated at 1,469,172 tonnes, compared with 1,285,818 tonnes in 2022.

On the other hand, the flow of passengers travelling with vehicles amounts to 236,968 passengers and 75,486 cars, representing increases of 11% and 25% respectively compared with 2022 data.
