In 2021, gold was again Senegal's top mining export, accounting for 66% of exports. Switzerland, which is home to some of the world's largest gold refineries, is an important partner for companies producing the yellow metal in Senegal.
Switzerland is the leading recipient of mining products exported by Senegal in 2021, with 51,31% of the total value of exports in the sector, compared to 45,1% in 2020. This is one of the pieces of information contained in the annual report of the local committee of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI), published at the end of December 2022.
This progression is explained by the country's gold production increases, because the yellow metal is the main mining product exported to Switzerland. Thus in 2020, more than 250 ounces were sold to Swiss refiners, compared to 000 ounces in 381.
Note that Australia came in second place in 2020 and 2021, in the ranking of countries importing Senegalese mining production. The country also imports gold, but also part of the silver production of the Australian company Resolute Mining.
Furthermore, France is among the last in the ranking of countries importing Senegalese mining production, with 0,47% of exports in 2021. For the first half of 2022, the EITI indicates that this share falls to 0,25%.
Among the products imported by France from Senegal, we find zircon and attapulgite, two minerals produced by Grande Côte Opérations, a subsidiary of the French group Eramet.
