Worth N$17 million, the new handling equipment, namely two reach stackers and four forklifts, were commissioned last week by the Namibian Ports Authority (Namport).
As for the reacher stackers, they were purchased from Liebherr-Africa and Forklifts and cost approximately 15 million Namibian dollars, bringing the number of reacher stackers at the port of Walvis Bay to ten.
As for the four forklifts, one of which will be made available to the port of Lüderitz and three to the port of Walvis Ba, they cost Namport 2 million Namibian dollars.
Let us recall that the Namibian Port Authority is a public company created in 1994 which is responsible for managing the ports of Walvis Bay and Lüderitz, which are the two largest ports in the country.
The Port of Walvis Bay specialises in containerised and bulk cargo with a minimum handling capacity of 900 TEUs since its expansion in 000.
While the port of Lüderitz previously had the status of a fishing port, it is becoming an increasingly versatile port with the handling of mining goods while supporting offshore oil exploration and diamond mining activities.
With a growing traffic of containerized and bulk goods confirmed by the statistics of January 31, 2022 from the Namibian Port Authority, i.e. a 4% increase in container traffic (4879 TEUs more handled) and a 5% increase in bulk volumes (173 Tonnes), the port of Namibia is positioning itself as a safe port that can allow economic operators to transport their goods while optimizing the cost of port passage.
This is also one of the reasons that prompted Namport to order this cutting-edge equipment to reduce the time taken to remove goods as well as the maintenance costs of the equipment to enable it to be the most efficient port on the continent.
Beyond services to goods, Namport also provides services to passenger ships. This is the example of the MS Europa liner which was welcomed at the Port of Walvis Bay on November 25, 2021, marking the resumption of services to passenger ships after a period of suspension due to the Covid-19 health crisis.
