Recently highlighted by the AfDB in a recent publication, the Fez-Saiss airport contributes considerably to the attractiveness of the region internationally.
In a recent publication, the Fez-Saiss airport, which offers an additional capacity of 2,5 million passengers, was recently highlighted by the African Development Bank (AfDB). Its new terminal inaugurated in 2017 thanks to the financial support of the AfDB, the airport recorded a traffic increase of around 60% between 2016 and 2019, going from 890.000 to 1,4 million travelers as reported by Maroc in its edition of May 5.
The post-Covid-19 recovery has notably revealed the potential of this airport for the AfDB: the increase in traffic has reached 5% since the resumption in June 2021 compared to June 2019. The newspaper also notes that the new terminal has strengthened existing jobs and created others. Noureddine Laghni, director of the airport estimates that "with 1,4 million passengers per year, it is a driving project for the local economy. If each of them spends 100 euros, that makes 140 million euros per year for the region."
Let us recall that this terminal, built by the National Airports Office (ONDA), designed by a Moroccan architect and built by national companies, required a total investment of 471 million dirhams, self-financed up to 37%, the remaining 295 million dirhams being contracted in the form of a loan granted by the ADB.
The projects implemented to modernize the country's airports launched by ONDA have benefited from 240 million euros from the African Development Bank. Achraf Hassan Tarsim, the Bank's country manager in Morocco, said "this is an additional link to strengthen integration with Morocco as a regional hub that connects Africa to the rest of the world."
