Morocco has formalized its membership in the Container Security Initiative (CSI), a U.S. cargo security program. This cooperation with U.S. customs authorities makes Tangier Med the first African port to join this initiative, strengthening its position as an international logistics hub.

On June 17, Moroccan and American authorities signed a declaration of principles in Rabat confirming Morocco's adherence to the CSI program. The American initiative aims to strengthen the screening of containers deemed at risk before they are shipped to the United States.

It is led by Customs and Border Protection (CBP). The partnership is based on data sharing, joint risk analysis, and advanced customs cooperation.

Tanger Med's integration into the CSI network marks a strategic step forward for the port complex. Already recognized for its efficiency and global connectivity, the port joins major hubs such as Algeciras, Marseille, and Gioia Tauro.

This recognition will reduce customs clearance times, streamline export procedures and strengthen the perceived reliability of the port among international shipowners and shippers.

This partnership is an extension of the mutual customs assistance agreement signed between Rabat and Washington in 2013. For the Moroccan Customs Administration, this step confirms the ambition to make Tanger Med a secure hub, capable of offering both trade security and logistical competitiveness.

Operators will benefit from a climate of increased trust, in a global context where security requirements combine with the search for fluidity.

This partnership allows Morocco to improve the security of its trade flows without hampering its commercial momentum with the United States. It is part of a logic of balance between enhanced security and smooth trade.

By joining the CSI network, Tanger Med strengthens its position in transcontinental circuits and affirms its commitment to international port security standards.
