The implementation of the intelligent transport system (ITS) project was part of the national road safety plan for the period 2021-2025. To this end, video verbalization was introduced in the Council of Ministers on July 7, 2021.
It should be remembered that this project aims to combat road incivility. After the awareness phase, the focus has now shifted to the repressive phase since September 7, 2021.
It was at the beginning of the week that officials from the Ministry of Transport and the company Quipux Afrique, the structure in charge of implementing this new tool called Intelligent Transport System (ITS), met journalists at the Maison de la Presse in Plateau to explain this innovative project to the population.
According to the stakeholders of this project, it has considerably contributed to the reduction in the rate of road accidents which has fallen by 44% in greater Abidjan since its inception.
A total of three hundred (300) vehicles have been impounded and more than a million vehicles have been video-fined, 90% of which were for speeding, they indicate, since the launch of the operation to date.
"Video ticketing is based on fixed and mobile cameras and aims to flash the license plates of vehicles that violate the highway code and to notify the owner of the vehicle of the fine," explained Mrs. Catherine Ayoma, who represented the General Manager of Quipux Afrique on the occasion.
She specifies that this approach "aims, among other things, to encourage road users to change their behavior and to preserve human lives."
Mr. Sanou Diawarra, who represented the Minister of Transport, stressed that "this innovative device aims to impact the behavior of road users in order to effectively achieve the objective of a 50% reduction in the number of people killed or injured by 2030."
Welcoming the advent of this system, the president of the National Union of Journalists of Côte d'Ivoire, believes that this project will make it possible to "relentlessly track down and flush out bad drivers on the roads."
