Gregory Krief (MSC Togo) reaffirms Lomé as a strategic hub for MSC in West Africa, highlighting its capacity to cope with increasing flows and regional competition.

The arrival of the MSC Diletta (24.000 TEU) in Lomé symbolises the importance of the port for MSC, thanks to its capacity to accommodate large ships and its position as a regional gateway: “Lomé remains an essential hub for MSC and for West Africa.” The port, with a capacity of 2,5 to 2,7 million TEU moves, currently handles around 1,7 million, giving it room for growth.

Lomé stands out as a deep-sea transshipment hub, unlike the ports of Abidjan and Tema, which are focused on their domestic markets. MSC has invested more than €500 million to modernize the terminal. According to Gregory Krief, "The port of Lomé benefits from a major strategic asset: it is a deep-sea port […] with a deep draft."

Despite the competition, Lomé is banking on its efficiency, reaching a record of more than 123.000 TEU moves in March 2024, including a small share for Togo. Its high productivity (32,5 movements per gantry crane/hour) and its recognized expertise reinforce its lead: “Lomé remains […] ahead of its regional competitors.”
