It should first be emphasized that CNOOC is already present in Gabon where it is currently active on 2 deepwater blocks (BC9 and BC10). Many investors have shown interest in the Gabonese sedimentary basin, including the American company Apache which also wishes to invest there.
Gabon showcased its oil blocks currently for sale during Africa Oil Week held in Cape Town, South Africa from October 3 to 7, 2022. Several investors from various countries expressed interest, including the oil company China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC).
The latter, which is already present in Gabon, has decided to acquire 6 new blocks and wishes to complete the agreements before December 2022, informs the Ministry of Petroleum.
Edgard Mbina Kombila, Director General of Hydrocarbons, stated that "CNOOC executives are currently requesting 6 new blocks that they wish to sign before December, more precisely before drilling their next well. We have reassured them that Gabon is currently open for the signing of all oil contracts."
Therefore, he continued, "I have instructed the teams to work quickly so that we meet by October 15 to begin discussing the economic and fiscal terms with this company that has been very aggressive in terms of oil research. So, like them, we also want to sign these 6 contracts before the end of November."
New Gabon reports that It is since November 2018 that the Gabonese State launched the auction campaign for 35 maritime oil blocks, in the form of a call for tenders, including 23 in deep offshore and 12 in conventional offshore.
"The auctions were aimed, among other things, at combating the long-term decline in production and at renewing the country's reserves through increased exploration," the Oil Ministry said.
