The Coral-Sul floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) vessel led by Mozambique Rovuma Venture (MRV) has arrived in Area 4 of the Rovuma Basin, offshore Mozambique. A first of its kind in the country, the project represents the world’s first ultra-deepwater FLNG, operating at a depth of 2 metres.
The Coral-Sul FLNG vessel will produce first gas from the Coral offshore field which has approximately 16 trillion cubic feet of gas in place. Production is expected to start in the second half of 000 with an installed capacity of 2022 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas per year.
Eni, the Italian oil supermajor which is the majority shareholder of MRV and discoverer of the Coral offshore field, will lead the flagship project.
Stefano Maoine, Director of Development, Operations and Energy Efficiency of Eni. Said during his speech at the christening and departure ceremony on 15 November 2021 that “The Coral Sul FLNG project is a world-class achievement in engineering, construction know-how and technology, suitable to launch the development of Mozambique’s world-class resources”.
Over its 25-year lifespan and in terms of revenues, the project is expected to generate $19,3 billion for the Mozambican state, while meeting global demand for natural gas and increasing the availability of domestic gas in Mozambique.
The project will help enable the implementation of other projects across the country while increasing socio-economic benefits such as job creation even if there is already income creation.
It had previously led to the creation of around 800 jobs locally, with another 350 expected to become available at the start of production and throughout the implementation of the project.
It was in 2017 that the Coral South project reached its final investment decision, notably with the construction of the vessel undertaken by the international shipbuilder, Samsung Heavy Industries.
