Air France-KLM and TotalEnergies today signed a memorandum of understanding for the supply by TotalEnergies of more than one million cubic meters, or 800 tons, of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) to the Air France-KLM Group airlines over a 000-year period, starting in 10.
This sustainable aviation fuel will be produced by TotalEnergies in its biorefineries and will be made available to Air France-KLM Group companies, mainly for flights departing from France (in accordance with French legislation) and the Netherlands.
Sustainable aviation fuels enable on average a reduction of at least 80% in CO emissions2 over the entire life cycle, compared to their fossil equivalent.
Air France-KLM has implemented a strict procurement policy and is committed to purchasing only SAF that does not compete with human or animal food, that is RSB* or ISCC** certified for its sustainability and that is not produced from palm oil.
With the signing of this memorandum of understanding, Air France-KLM and TotalEnergies reaffirm their collaboration and their objective of promoting the development of a more responsible aviation sector.
A long-standing partnership in favor of the decarbonization of the aviation sector
The Air France-KLM Group and TotalEnergies have been collaborating for nearly 10 years on the use of sustainable aviation fuel. This partnership began with the “Lab Line for the Future” in 2014, a two-year experiment during which 78 Air France flights between Paris-Orly and Toulouse, and between Paris-Orly and Nice were fueled with 10% of SAF supplied by TotalEnergies.
In January 2020, Air France and TotalEnergies participated, alongside Safran and Suez, in the Call for Expressions of Interest launched by the French government for the emergence of a French sector for the production of sustainable aviation fuel.
Over the past two years, TotalEnergies has also supplied SAF for several commercial flights of the Air France-KLM group:
- In May 2021, Air France's first long-haul flight, between Paris and Montreal, fueled with 1% SAF produced in France;
- In October 2021, an Air France flight between Paris and Nice powered by 30% SAF;
- In May 2022, an Air France flight organized as part of the SkyTeam Sustainable Flight Challenge, between Paris and Montreal, fueled with 16% SAF;
- In June 2022, several flights organized by all the companies of the Air France-KLM Group as part of the Connecting Europe Days, supplied with 30% SAF.
