Le Rwanda et le Kenya veulent placer le commerce et le transport au cœur de leurs rapports bilatéraux. D’ailleurs, ce thème a fait l’objet d’échanges entre le président kenyan, Uhuru Kenyatta et son homologue rwandais, Paul Kagame, qui était en visite de travail à Nairobi.
Dans un communiqué de la présidence kenyane il est annoncé que « la position stratégique du Rwanda dans la région en fait un partenaire commercial important du Kenya, en particulier en tant que porte d’entrée vers l’est de la République démocratique du Congo et le marché plus large de la région des Grands Lacs ».
C’est avec l’Ouganda que le Rwanda avait rouvert le poste-frontière de Gatuna (ou Katuna) le 31 janvier dernier, après deux ans de fermeture de part et d’autre pour des raisons diplomatiques. Ledit poste constitue pour le pays un point de passage obligatoire des marchandises provenant du port de Mombasa.
Kigali veut considérablement varier ses canaux d’approvisionnement, pour renforcer sa position enclavée. Les exportations du Kenya vers le Rwanda se sont élevées à 236,89 millions de dollars US en 2020 Selon l’Organisation mondiale du commerce.
Du papier, des combustibles minéraux, des huiles, de la maroquinerie, et des produits pharmaceutiques composent entre autres les cargaisons déjà expédiées.
